Hi friends,

My last experience in donating blood in one of the mobile drives:

I went thru the medical examination/ tests. When the medical officer i/c asked me if i had taken any drugs recently - i casually mentioned abt me taking PANADOL EXTRA to get rid of my tension headache the earlier evening. Though, my blood group was a very rare group (A neg) , the doctor was helpless and advised me to come back after few weeks for donating if i am interested ( and also mentioned that the bank was in urgent need of my group blood supply ).

I returned back to the next mobile drive a week later and met the same medical officer. He recognised me and thanked me for donating.

I have donated close to 12 times in India and my father ( veteran in blood donation ) has donated more than 50 times and was also recognised by Lions club for his service - But never knew the fact that Paracetamol remains in the blood for 3 days and makes our blood unsuitable for donation.

Rgds

Siva.

I have a friend who was a regular plasma/platelet donor. He went for a tooth surgical extraction and was asked to wait for 3 months before donating. i guess most ppl forget that besides taking of medicine, dental work also need temporary deferral.

Accupuncture must wait for 1 year... wonder why... i thought the needles used by the chinese doctor must be sterilised :? Accunpunture was known to be an effective form of treatment. means i got to avoid accunpunture

Tooth extraction or dental work, wait for 3 days after treatment (wisdom tooth surgical extraction, please wait 3 months)

Tattoo, pierced ears, accupuncture and blood transfusions, wait 1 year and inform the attending doctor/nurse

i think that donors need to be better educated about what causes them to be unsuitable for donation. A few times i noticed donors who came left because they were not prepared ie took medication etc, once when we organised a blood drive, out of the 130 that came about 30 were rejected because of various reasons incl weight, medications, flu etc.

I think they are taking a very cautious way in protecting both donor and patient (who will receive the blood).

If a donor takes medicine the previous day, it means that in some way, the donor is not well. It's a risk to both the donor and patient.

To donor, risk to have health problem during or after donation.
To patient, risk of virus that might go thru undetected.

Agree with Shan Xue, I felt waiting period for Accupuncture is too long....1 year
